Browns | Dilfer Coming Onboard
Sat, 5 Mar 2005

Jay Glazer, of FoxSports.com, reports the Cleveland Browns and Seattle Seahawks have agreed in principle on a deal that will send Seahawks QB Trent Dilfer to the Browns in exchange for what is believed to be a fourth- or fifth-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. It is also believed the Browns will attempt to re-work Dilfer's current contract.

While I don't approve of giving up draft picks, even late round ones when you're rebuilding, it's not absurd. The Browns needed someone with experience QBing on their roster. Who were their other options: Warner, Johnson, Vinny-T, mind you that Arizona, and Chicago have to be factored into for potential bidding wars with either of these guys.

Dilfer is a career backup, but that's exactly what they're bringing him in for, to be the veteran backup, because they're going to take Alex Smith or Aaron Rodgers, and whichever one they take will get a trial by fire introduction into the NFL.

Well this isnt a signing to be the Brown's QB of the future as everyone knows. With Holcomb gone now, I feel that Dilfer was prolly the best of the crappy bunch of QBs left. He will start for a year or two and groom whomever we decide to take in the draft.

This makes Alex Smith to the Browns look like more of a possiblity...

i dont see dilfer making a big impact there. i really thought they would try to snag someone a little better....even brad johnson would have been an improvement.

As long as the Browns take a franchise QB in the draft this move is fine. Dilfer isn't anything to get excited about, but he can help guide Smith or any other young arm that comes to Cleveland.

Luke McCown is also another that Dilfer could help train...

I know he's young, and his potential isn't exactly widely discussed, but its always worth a second look.

Which leaves the door open to drafting Johnson

I'm going to agree with the previous posters. Dilfer can be the "bus driver" while they see if McCown develops. If they draft a QB I expect it would be a late round project type.

I don't know the team that well but it seems they need some help in the secondary, at linebacker and a legitimate #1 receiver.
