5 reasons why not to draft a Minn RB

Onterrio Smith - RB - MIN Mar 6 2005 1:08PM

The News
The Vikings are reportedly considering trading up in the draft to draft a running back.

Our Take
Minnesota may use a revolutionary five-tailback formation as their base offense. Adding a rookie runner would be terrible news for Onterrio Smith and Michael Bennett, and makes absolutely no sense to us. So the Vikings will probably do it.

Vikings could trade up for RB

CHARLEY WALTERS

The Vikings admit they will fib if necessary to conceal their plans for the NFL draft, which still is nearly seven weeks away. But already there is speculation they might trade up to choose a running back they can rely on. Team officials say it's not inconceivable.

That probably would require that the Vikings combine their Nos. 7 and 18 overall selections to move up to No. 2 or No. 3. The Miami Dolphins own the No. 2 pick, the Cleveland Browns No. 3. Expected to be available at No. 2 is running back Cedric Benson of Texas. Auburn running backs Carnell Williams and Ronnie Brown are expected to be available within the top eight picks. Dennis Green's Arizona Cardinals hold the No. 8 pick.

• There has been talk that Green might try to trade with the Vikings for oft-injured Michael Bennett, whom he coached at Minnesota. Bennett said he hasn't heard those rumors.

"Are you sure they're just rumors?" a curious Bennett asked

The MIN RBs are really interesting. Tice doesnt seem to have any confidence in Bennett, O. Smith has his drug issues and you cant completely rely on him, Moore is too small to be an every down back, Moe is more of a short yardage guy (even though he proved he could handle the load). They really dont have a sure thing at RB, and moving up to get one wouldnt be a terrible idea as long as they move a couple of the guys they have now.

Needless to say though, they are the Vikings and probably will find a way to mess things up :-o

Thats about right. They can then trade the 2nd round pick for Henry and dump Culpepper for Vick.

Every play is a series of laterals. Forward pass? We don't need no stinking forward pass!

I doubt this happens but if it does Tice really is dumber than I thought.

Geez...

If there is anyone lagging on the "Fire everybody from Minny's FO" (and isn't a fan of a NFL North team), this should convert the rest.

Onterrio is doing a pretty solid job (or you know.. he would if he started and was kept in), Michael still has plenty of skill, Moe is a nice GL pounder (though older), and Mewelde was developing nicely last year. WHAT IS THE FRICKIN' PROBLEM?

Sigh... Vikings fans, I really am sorry. This must be frustrating as Hell...

This is very frustrating... I could run the front office better than this, its not hard. Sign Burress and a LB, maybe get Samari Rolle... we have 31 freaking million!! We dont need another RB, we have four, we dont need another #2 reciever, we have a couple of those. We dont need napolean harris, we have Dontarius Thomas and EJ henderson, Harris is like a Thomas clone!!! The Vikings FO is horrible! Its not terribly hard to figure out what we need...

Well it makes perfect sense. If you talk alot about making moves then when it doesn't happen blame it on the player or agent not the lame-duck owner who is tight. Atleast we can take comfort to know that they still need to sign atleast one more guy to get to the minimum cap number. As a fortune teller, I see the future and it is a 3 headed monster....Bennett/Smith/Moe.... Yippee, can't wait to see Travis Taylor in purple??

Tice is just planning for the future where somehow, the NFL turns into a rugby league, then his 7 RB gameplan will bear fruit.

Are the Vikings trying to make the idea of relocating seem easier?
I know that not having an owner right now is making any moves nearly impossible. And moving from a cheapskate in Dread McCombs to a guy who had to take on partners to get the cash for the deal doesn't bode well for them spending much this season.

I hate the TiceQueens, but it sucks to see them being dismantled right before our very eyes.
