Nick Schenck, of Chargers.com, reports at the NFL's annual owners meetings currently being held in Maui, representatives from each NFL club will vote on whether or not teams should be penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct if they call consecutive timeouts on defense during field goal attempts or any dead-ball situation, commonly referred to as "icing the kicker." For the proposal to pass, 24 of the 32 NFL teams (75 percent) must approve it.

From the horse-collar tackle (which has its OWN thread... none of that in here) to this, I am getting agitated. Icing the kicker is a time-honored startegy. Kickers are PAID TO DO ONE JOB... if they can't handle the pressure, they are not preforming their job correctly. This is like saying the NFL should elimate the concept of "defense," as tends to make QBs nervous.

I can't see this happening. If it does, I will be extremely upset...

i read about this earler this week while reading about the union problems. even putting this elimination of "icing the kicker" to a vote is really stupid.

you should be able to call your timeout whenever you want...

say you have 12 men on the field for a FG try and take a timeout to fix the problem. you are subsequently flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct and the other team is awarded 15 yds and a 1st down. this is the stupidest thing i have ever heard and i know the owners will see the same thing...

I don't think this is worthy of their attention either but I see why they're doing it. I'm sure it's in an effort to speed up the game. Still stupid though.

Probably because it lengthens the game and is as boring as hell. But I agree teams should be able to call a time-out whenever they want.

I dont even think icing the kicker works anyways, so i guess i kinda like this, because that way the next time im on the edge of my seat waiting for the possible game winning FG, i wont have to worry about waiting an extra minute

This is rediculous. Teams should definately be able to use their time outs whenever they want. I agree it's boring and I don't think it works, but that's not the point.
