49ers: Rivers mentioned in No. 1 overall pick trade rumor

News
There are rumors of trade talks between the 49ers and Chargers involving the No. 1 overall pick in next month's draft, according to an ESPN website report. In exchange for giving up the first pick in the draft, the Niners would get quarterback Philip Rivers from the Chargers. Rivers, who was selected with the No. 4 overall pick and acquired by the Chargers in the Eli Manning trade, played a backup role last season due to the surprising success of starter Drew Brees.

Views
It's hard to say whether this trade will come to fruition, but it makes sense for both clubs if the Niners feel that Rivers has more upside than rookie signal callers Alex Smith (Utah) and Aaron Rodgers (California). Meanwhile, the Chargers would gain the top pick in the draft which they could use to select a wide receiver such as Braylon Edwards (Michigan) or Mike Williams (USC). We'll continue to follow this potential story and keep you posted on all of trade rumors leading up to draft day.

I thought I heard that the Chargers would also include a pick in the deal?

IMO, Rivers is worth the #1 pick, because Alex Smith and Aaron Rogers aren't really top pick caliber.

I like Rivers also. He has more upside then Rodgers and Smith IMO.

Heard on ESPN radio today that the Chargers are vehemenly denying this rumor. They say they are going to wait until the 2005 season is over to decide what they want to do with their QB situation.

It was all over ESPNEWS today also...and I know someone brought it up here already (you guys catch everything in the news! ;-D ).

Mortensen talked to both sides and said they had no desire to trade or acquire Rivers.

The 49ers front office believes that the top 5 players in this draft are better than any player in last year's draft (including Rivers). :-)

reason #1 that that is a bunch of bull from the 49ers and that they know that rivers is worth their pick easily. They are fishing for a better deal.
ADMIN edit: please note that the overall sig limit is 12k - thanks!

I think the no. 1 pick for Rivers and the 12th pick is a good deal for San Fran.

I don't expect them to do this trade though.
First the Shock, then the Pistons can the Lions be next?

Well maybe next yr.

PS I didn't lose a paper bag challenge but somehow as a Lion's fan it just feels right.

I think it would be an excellent deal for my niners. However, i don't see it happening as that is a little too much to give up for SD.
