Some cultures actually use this kind of thing to bring men into manhood or produce visions, that kind of stuff.I saw some tribe on TV awhile ago,African or S.American(can't remember),where the object was to put two hooks in your chest, hang from them, when they broke through you were a man...to each his own.

There was an episode of Wild Boyz in Peru or Ecuador or somewhere around there, and I guess you have to wear a glove full of army ants for about 30 seconds to be a man. The glove looked like an oven mitt with feathers on it. Of course, Steve-o and Pontius did it, and the next day they had horribly swollen hands and had to get shots in the butt.

I know people who have done this and they claim that it actually is relaxing more than anything. He usually reads while suspended.
Personally, if you come at me with hooks the last thing on my mind is relaxation. But if he likes it, I can't tell him what to do. At least these people aren't the ones going out into public and shooting people. They get upset and put a meathook through their own back.
I briefly dated a girl that was into body suspension.. she wasn't tattooed and didn't have holes covering her body from oddly placed piercings. She apparently got into the ritual by following her ancestry back to some south american tribe or other that practiced hangings to promote enlightenment and visions..
Apparently the pain is only very brief. She said she went up on the hooks, it was like a very cold shock, and then her mind travelled past the pain and allowed to her think much more clearly.
In a way, it seems very similar to transcendental meditation in that it's a method of looking past bodily feeling and emotion and entering a state of being and thinking that ignores everything physical.
It's not for me, but if people are using it as a spiritual or mental outlet, I certainly have nothing against the practice. When it's being used by overly tattooed kids as just another kick is where the head shaking and disconcertion comes in.
