Watch out for Vincent Jackson (draft related post)...

Postby warrick95 » Sat Apr 09, 2005 12:00 am

Haven't been around here lately since it's baseball season. Sorry guys. :-/

Since the draft is getting close and I love the draft, I wanted to throw a name out for y'all:

Vincent Jackson, WR, Northern Colorado

He's 6'4 3/4", 241 lbs, and runs a legit 4.55 (official time). That size/speed is impressive, especially for a WR. Obviously he'd create tremendous matchup problems out there. The problem with him, is that he's raw (in aspects of the game that need polish, like technique, routes, footwork) and inconsistent. He played against a lower level of competition. However, the physical abilities are all there, including soft hands. Matt Jones is getting a lot of pub and this guy could be just as good. A player pretty similar to him, believe it or not, is Mike Williams. Same big body, decent speed to size ratio. However, Williams is obviously proven on the large stage and younger. However, Jackson potentially could be a player of similar ability. I believe he's around a late Day 1 pick right now, so the value is certainly there. A possible comparison to him is an even bigger Terrell Owens, because of what he can do. We'll also see how quick he is. Receivers have to make quick cuts in routes to make catches and it's obviously harder for a bigger guy to do so. If he can do that, the package is going to be pretty damn impressive.

Like Williams (and Jones) he may end up at TE, where he'd be a huge matchup threat (this would obviously be developmental since all aspects of playing TE are entirely different from the mindset of play WR), but I think most teams would like to try him out at WR first.
"The son of Bobby Bowden once again proved he's as predictable as a Julia Roberts' movie.

And upon further review, just as sappy, too."

I am not really a fan of the word "potential". The Saints have drafted and signed players that have the potential to be good i.e. Stallworth, Sullivan.

With those physical tools I can see a late 3rd early 4th rounder being used on him by many teams. That might be reaching though, because the fact is, if he's raw chances are you're going to have to spend lots of time developing him. Lots of teams just dont seem patient enough to wait 2-3 years. If he does work out, the team that might get the best deal is not the one that drafts him, but the one that signs him after he's been developed.

Well he is obviously a TE, not a WR.

Jones, on the other hand, should be a WR if he really does run a 4.4.

Why should Jackson be a TE if Mike williams who runs a slower 40 is a WR? Should Williams be a WR too?

At the Senior Bowl he was clocked at 4.47 and 4.48. He's got plenty of speed for WR.

Honestly, I love this guy. I think he could be a great player. That size and speed is going to be really hard to match up with if he can adjust to the pro game. He allready has great hands, so everything he needs to learn is just technique. I really hope the Skins draft him in the third round.
