Colts Kicker ?

Is it possible that Vanderjagt is going to lose his job to Conway.

I've seen the prseason stats and it seems these two kickers are being juggled alot more then kickers on other teams.

Is Vanderjagt in Dungy's dog house after those comments he made last year or is all forgoten?

Vandy is too good to lose his starting spot, doghouse or not.

Being a Canadian, and living 30 mins from where he grew up, I'll back Vandy on this one. Peyton shouldn't have made those comments about him. "Too bad our idiot kicker had to open his mouth....idiot kicker blah blah blah....idiot kicker did this and that....etc" was the gist of it. I didn't know anybody was stupid enough to make fun of a player on his own team on international television (it was on here in canada too, as well as many other countries). Manning is a good player but it doesn't give him the right to do that...

That's so illogical, man. You make it clear that you're biased, for one. Second, you forget that Manning was responding to Vandy's comments in which he second guessed both his coach and QB.

Kickers--with their tiny little face masks and aversion to physical contact--should never open their mouths like that and speak out against a great coach and QB.

Manning was right; he's just a stupid kicker.

For reference, here's some of Vandy's original comments. Payton was right to call him an idiot kicker.

And to answer the original post... I think Vandy and Manning are fine now, and he'll be with them for awhile.

----

"I'm not a real big Colts fan right now, unfortunately," the Canadian kicker told The Score, a Toronto-based cable sports TV network. "I just don't see us getting better."

The 10-6 Colts finished second behind Tennessee (11-5) in the AFC South Division. But Indianapolis's season ended with an embarrassing 41-0 road loss to the New York Jets in the AFC wild-card game.

Manning struggled against the Jets, completing 14-of-31 passes for 137 yards and two interceptions. The loss dropped Manning's NFL post-season playoff record to 0-3, which Vanderjagt says lends credibility to the talk that Manning can't win the big game.

"I think there is some validity to it," Vanderjagt said. "All week before the Jets game I'm like, '(No.) 18, we're going to handle it, me and you we're going to win this game.' And he's like, 'Yeah, yeah, OK.'

"And I'm like, 'Peyton, show some enthusiasm, you're the quarterback and we need to win this game.' I just don't see it from him."

Vanderjagt, from Oakville, Ont., said the Colts' offence desperately needs a fiery, smashmouth leader.

"We need somebody who is going to get in people's face and yell and scream," said Vanderjagt, who helped the Toronto Argonauts win consecutive Grey Cups (1996-'97) before joining the Colts in '98. "I've gone over there to the offence and said, 'Come on.'

"They're just like, 'Mike, go sit down. You're the kicker.' I have more emotion probably than anybody. I want to win, I want to win bad. When I miss a field goal I bang my helmet because I hate being imperfect and I can't tolerate watching 11 guys just walk off the field after you get stuffed and really show that you don't care. That is frustrating to me."

In his first season with Indianapolis, Dungy transformed the team into a playoff squad after it missed the post-season last year with a 6-10 mark. But Vanderjagt feels Dungy is too laid back to make the Colts a Super Bowl contender.

"Coach Dungy, he's just a mild-mannered guy," Vanderjagt told The Score. "He doesn't get too excited, he doesn't get too down and I don't think that works either.

"I think you need a motivator, I think you need a guy that is going to get in somebody's face when they're not performing well enough. Peyton and Tony are basically the same guy. They work hard, they mark their Xs and Os and go out and execute. If it doesn't happen, there's nothing we can do about it."

kicking job

Postby Steel Curtain » Fri Aug 22, 2003 8:35 am

I believe this is Conway's job to lose. He was a former 3rd round draft choice (which is extremely high for any kicker not named Janikowski) who had some injury problems. Just because not much has been said lately about the problem between Manning and vanderjact doesn't mean all is forgiven and forgotten. They would love to see him out (management, coaches, and especially Manning). Unless he shows he is much better than Conway (which he hasn't yet) he will not be kept. Conway would also be much cheaper.

colts kicker

Postby Steel Curtain » Fri Aug 22, 2003 1:47 pm

Here is a link to a story about their battle. Some of the key things I believe are for one Vanderjact missed both his FG's including a 25 yarder. Conway made a short fg and missed one, but it was from pretty far out. Also Vanderjact's jerk of a personality came out when he comments on his missed fg, which I'm sure doesn't help him with his coaches or teammates. And Dungy refers to them both as two of the best fg kickers in the league which gives some indication of how highly he thinks of Conway that brings me to my conclusion that if they are close to equal the job will go to Conway.
