I lived in Virginia for a while - people would ask for an "orange coke" or "root beer coke", etc. I never lived any place where "soda" was the preferred term, though.

For those of you fourtunate to have never been to the South, the waitresses call it "coke." As in,

"I'll have a coke."

"what kind?"

"regular."

(or whatever you want)

And no, pop is lame. "I'll have a spot of pop, please." Soda is the correct name. Tolerance for other states/regions be damned...

Pop is the way to go for sure. If you say Soda around here you will be given various funny looks.
