Player Incentives

I was listening to Rick Barry and Rod Brooks on Am 680 in the Bay Area last week. Rod Brooks was under the assupmtion that in both football and basketball, incentives don't count against the cap.

Obviously this would be an easy way to circumvent the cap. Why not give everyone minimal contracts and heavy incentives?

LT you make league minimum... but get 7 million once you achieve 5 total rushing yards for the season.

What portion and how does the league figure incentives against a team's salary cap?

Ha, that would be pretty funny to see that done.

At first thought, I would say that those guys were right. But, I don't think the NFL would allow a contract like that. There has to be some sort of protocol for those incentives.

Plus, the player wouldn't want it either. What happens if the player blows a knee in the pre-season? He wouldn't get the 5 yards and would lose himself 7 million dollars...not much he could do about it either.

If a player blew his knee in game 1 or in preseason...

I am sure he'd find a way to crawl to get those 5 yards.
