They didnt combine them, madden bought all the rights to the nfl, so there is no espn NFL game anymore.
Madden (EA) also bought the rights to the ESPN interface and name, so in a way they are combined. Maybe it is you who doesn't know what they're talking about....

Yeah, They combined Madden's excellent gameplay, with ESPN's excellent interface. This will be the biggest gap between the previous years Madden, and the new Madden ever; until next year of course, on the new systems.

You don't know what you're talking about. They are using the ESPN setup for the actual game. Just like you would see an actual game on ESPN.
