First, This is a good article, thanks for posting it, interesting that there seems to be justification for it. It sure seemed to work with Kaeding in the playoffs last year, he was pacing the sidelines like he had diarrhea.

Second, it gives me another opportunity to complain about my pet peeve, which is the announcers solemnly informing us that this is known as "icing the kicker", like they're passing along deep inside information. We know it's called icing the kicker, we've only been told that a million freakin times. Maybe somewhere there is a tiny fledgling football fan that doesn't know it already but to most of your audience you just sound like a dimwit.

Intruiging article GP ;-D I've wondered for some time now whether or not "icing the icker" made that big of a difference, and now I know ;-D

I think too that a lot depends on the K - Vinatieri is no stranger to pressure kicks - did it once before in the Super Bowl even. Now, if we're talking Scott Norwood, that's a different story (I forget now - did Parcell's ice him before that kick???)

I don't care who the kicker is. If statistically iced kickers have 10% less success, the game's on the line, and I don't need my timeouts, I'll burn em. I may not believe its going to effect a great kicker like Vinatieri, but it can't hurt.

Good point - ya got nothing to lose by doing it.
And something I meant to mention in my first reply - there's other variables to consider too - for instance when it's a December in Green Bay or Denver and it's minus 20 in a blizzard and ya ice the kicker, you are literally icing the kicker (especially if your opponent is a hot weather team like the Dolphins or Arizona to name a few).

exactly... if there's no use for 'em see if it works

I'm with maddog60...unless there was no benefit from the kicker missing the field goal, or I thought I needed that time out there is no doubt that I would attempt the ice. If it doesn't cost you anything, why fret?

Maybe coaches need to combat this by telling the kicker they now have decided to go for it on 4th down...and just as he relaxes, trot him out there! That would put the pressure back on with no time to think, just go kick it! Okay, maybe not, but it was still a pretty good read, and informative as well. I really didn't believe that icing truly worked.

Very good read. I'll have to use some trivia like this some time during the year.
