How many teams do you invite to the Big Dance???

Postby Shotgun StU » Sun Jul 17, 2005 4:10 pm

I was wondering what people thought about how many playoff teams to include in the playoffs? I am in a 12 team league with a default setting of 6 teams but as Commish I made it eight.
I figure that people will remain interested if they still have a shot at the big prize leading to less absentee owners who give up early. But the downside is that the two top teams are not rewarded with a bye which can be huge to help you advance.
What do you think 6 or 8 playoff teams with a league of twelve? ;-D :-t :-?

There's a reason I don't care about March Madness. Too many teams.

No reason any team finishing in the bottom half of the league should have a shot at the title.

Most I'll do is 6 out of 12. Having 8 just makes the regular season pointless.

Depends on the size of the league. I figure this -

8 teams: 4 in the playoffs
10 teams: 4 in the playoffs
12 teams: 4-6 in the playoffs
14 teams: 6 in the playoffs
16 teams: 6 in the playoffs

EDIT: Corrected spelling.

Yeah...if you've got a 12 teamer, 6 to me would be maximum. If I've beaten a bunch of teams in the reg. season and I get beat by some random dude who had a lucky week, I'm going to be a little mad. At least if you're in the top half you probably won more than you lost.

Personally, I think 4 is best for 8, 10, or 12 teamers. It gets you another week of reg. season in order to attempt to break ties. Six is fine for a 16 team league, but then you have three weeks of playoffs...and you really shouldn't use week 17 for your Super Bowl. :-o

My league goes a bit overboard on the playoffs, 8 of 14 get in.
It does wonders for keeping the bottom feeders interested and finishing the season though.

In my money league all teams go to the playoffs but the bottom four play each other for picks 5-8 in next years draft with the winner getting priority in their draw, the middle four play each other for picks 1-4 with the winner getting priority in their draw and the top four play each other for the championship and picks 9-12 with the winner getting the big money and last priority in their draw. So only four play for the championship, but every team has a stake til the last game. This has worked very well in keeping teams interested.

Thats a decent idea. We have a toilet bowl to go along with our super bowl. We throw a small percent of the total pot for the bottom feeders to fight for.

Here are how my leagues run playoffs
16 team dynasty - 6 make the playoffs (2 byes; 3 playoff weeks)
12 team - 6 make the playoffs (2 byes; 3 playoff weeks)
10 team - 6 make playoffs (2 byes; 3 playoff weeks)
10 team - 6 make playoffs (2 byes; 3 playoff weeks)
8 team - 4 make playoffs (2 playoffs weeks)

I don't mind any of my formats except that the 8 team league plays on week 17 for the championship :-t :-t (It is my first league I joined with friends 12 years ago, I have been trying to get it changed for the past 8 years)

8 teams for a 12 team league is too many, 6 is best in most formats ;-D
