The auction style league is a wonder to behold and you have been missing some big fun if you haven't tried it yet. You have $200 glorious fantasy dollars to spend on ANY player you covet, EVERYONE has a shot at LT, not just the 1.1 or MAYBE the 1.2 pick. Just make sure you save at least $1 for each open spot on your roster.
The initial auction is done 'eBay' style. That is to say, you place a bid amount on a player for $5 as the most you are willing to spend on that specific player. But, the auction board shows that you have opened bidding at $1. Team 2 comes in and bids $2, but the computer automatically raises the bid on your behalf to $3 and THE AUCTION CLOCK DOESN'T RESET! The only time the auction clock resets to the 24 hour timer on a player is when a NEW TEAM has taken the Hi Bid (Basically, they have to bid higher than your highest proxy bid for that to happen). This removes those last minute bids with 2 minutes remaining. Basically, so long as one team keeps the high bid with the computer bidding as your proxy up to your declared price limit, the timer doesn't reset. Check out the rules for all the details.
The best part about an auction style dynasty league is turnover. Each player on every roster gets a salary increase based on their performance the prior year. Sure, stud's like LaDainian Tomlinson are going to be in the top 5 and they are going to have a cap increase, but in this league ALL the players get a cap increase, even that scrub who sat on your bench and put up 15 fantasy points last year. It's based on a formula that covers current salary AND prior years performance. The salary increases are calculated in January and every team has until May 15th to make trades or drops to get back below their cap of $200 in time for the one round rookie draft.
The one round rookie draft has cap prices that are set for each draft pick (similar to the real NFL rookie draft where the #1 pick gets paid more than the #2 pick and so on). This is the ONLY drafting that is done in this league and rookie's are the ONLY players that can be chosen. Following this rookie draft are three auction periods in June, July, and August where you manipulate your team and cap to acquire players. This is a 16 team league which makes things even more interesting over a 12 team league. I've played in this format for two years now and it's been an absolute BLAST, just full of activity and players switching teams and lot's of cool and crazy stuff happening.
If you've never tried an auction league I would HIGHLY recommend it. Feel free to e-mail me at mailto:firstname.lastname@example.org with questions. If you want to join this league put Lombardi League in the title. Thanks!
