Why didn't Cadillac play this week?

Postby Free Bagel » Mon Aug 15, 2005 9:19 am

Any word on why Caddy didn't play in the Bucs first preseason game? He signed right around the same time as a lot of other rookie RBs that played this week, any word on why Caddy wasn't one of them?

Good question. I was actually watching that game, looking forward to seeing him, so I could evaluate him a bit.

This is what I found:

Basically he was held out simply for safety reasons and the fact that Gruden wanted to see what these others could do with more of a work load.

Kinda stupid that he didnt even get one series in if you ask me.

From what I read, Gruden didn't want to "unveil" Caddy until the home-opening preseason game thi

Caddy was in one at least one snap at the beginning of the game even though he didn't log a carry. They didn't want to risk him this early in the preseason apparently.. probably because the backup RBs in Tampa are so doubtful (Garner knee/Alstott neck). Gruden likes to have depth for his depth, so it's not surprising he gave the guys fighting for roster spots a whole game to prove themselves capable.

As to Caddy:

Gruden was quoted as saying "We know what Caddy can do, he doesn't need to be tested" something along the lines of that. You thought he had major praise for the guy in training camp and before and after the NFL draft? Gruden is so high on the guy he doesn't even need to see him get a heavy workload during the early preseason. Risk management? Overconfidence? Plain stupidity?

Maybe he thinks he is going to be a hidden weapon come week 1 who knows. More likely he just doesn't want to risk an injury to his centerpiece (other stud players are pulled after a few snaps in game 1).

Caddy is slowly climbing up my redraft sheets and is now the RB to target in the late 3rd/early 4th round IMO. Top10 potential the way the Tampa O-line was opening holes...
---

Game 2 is a must see. I would expect Caddy to get the bulk of his preseason playing time here.
