Thought of the Day: Is FF gambling?

Postby confused_jake » Fri Aug 19, 2005 10:56 pm

I have been thinking about this today and am wondering. If you pay for a league, is FF gambling? if a player plays FF would he get kicked out?

IMO: Fantasy Football is only gambling when money is involved, otherwise you can't consider it gambling because no amount of money is being wagered.

No, because its a game that is mostly skill. When you play for money, that goes towards a prize, and also towards funding the league. I'm trying to think of another example like it.

It's not if you are good. :-)

But seriously, it sort of is because there is luck involved with players staying healthy and what not.

You could maybe liken it to a golf tournament where you pay so much to get in and then if you win you get money but if not then you don't...is that gambling?

Well, I guess money leagues are gambling.... sort of...

Just like in Vegas you can bet on the outcome of any football game, boxing match, Tour de France or whatever sporting event. And even though Lance Armstrong was the clear favorite in this years Tour de France, betting $100 on him to win the event would still be considered gambling.

So is FF gambling? If you're playing for pride and bragging rights, I guess it's not. If you're playing in a money league, then yes, I think you can consider it gambling.

I would group gambling into these 3 categories:

True gambling is playing games like roulette or craps, hoping for the best on the spin of the wheel or the roll of the dice.

Second would be sports betting and fantasy money leagues. Very skilled players will win in the long run through study, practice, etc. where they gain an edge, but utimately you leave your money up to the players on the field.

Third would be something like poker, where luck is in the fall of the cards, but you directly affect what happens: how much to put in, what to play, etc (you make the decisions). Some days you will lose due to the fall of the cards, but a quality player wins in the long run.

So money leagues are gambling to a point, but if know what you are doing, at least you can create a cretain edge over others. ;-D

You guys are probably going to laugh at me for this(i know i laughed at myself), but this is something i was thinking of.

OK, Pete Rose bet on baseball, possibly against his own team. If that was the case then he could play a hand in making his team lose so he gets more money.

Here is where the laughter starts, this is where i see the relationship.

Say Ray Lewis had a ff money league, and ahman green is on his fantasy team. if he purposly missed a tackle so he would get more yards/touchdowns, so his fantasy team would do good.

Am I on something, or did i actually say something logical?

Well, unless Lewis' money league buy-in is around $1 million I wouldn't see this happening. I dont think you have to worry about players tanking games in the NFL, but thats my opinion.

I consider it skilled gambling b/c if you are playing for money, its gambling. Even if you invest in the stock market, I think its considered gambling.

It is definitely gambling. You are taking a risk. Playing the stock market game is also gambling. Just not the same kind of gambling that goes on at casinos.
