It makes sense that you root for who you can watch on TV/ attend games for. I think thats a pretty obvious reason... I tried being a Rockets fan (NBA) because I liked Steve Francis, and trust me, its a pain when you cant see any of their games.

This is very true, that is what makes NFL Sunday Ticket so great. Unfortunately I don't have it yet, so I have to watch the Bengals at a sports bar. Living in North Carolina around 1989/1990, I didn't really have a local NFL team. My dad was a Rams fan, but he didn't really try to get me to pull for the Rams. He taught me how to read by reading the Sports section of the newspaper (USA Today I believe). I remembered being fascinated by the NFL and MLB particularly. Learning all the statistics and what blocking was and what not. I decided it would be more fun to have a team to pull for, and at the time I was fascinated by tigers. So I pulled for the Bengals (NFL) and Tigers (MLB).
Then the Panthers came, but I already had a favorite team. Everyone around me started pulling for them, but that just made me want to pull for them less. I guess overall that makes me an ODB, having no potential to be a homer.
However, today, if I didn't have this strong built up loyalty to the Bengals, I certainly wouldn't pull for the Bengals. I would probably make my decision based on which owner I like the best. And Mike Brown is not a guy that would draw me in. I'd be a Texans fan (Bob McNair). But I've been a Bengals fan for this long, it's not going to change. So I think there's a 4th type of fan, one that is a fan directly because of a player, coach, or owner.
For example, being one of the worlds biggest Jerricho Cotchery fans, I pull for the Jets when they don't play the Bengals. It's solely because I'm pulling for J-Co, but if they do well I don't think it's fair to call me a bandwagon fan necessarily.
Now that we've established that I'm two types of fans, I'm also a homer when it comes to college sports. I go to NC State University and I'm a Wolfpack fan for life because of it.
So there are a lot of different reasons for being a fan - and I can understand all of them, except the dreaded homer-bandwagoners.
I used to live in Baltimore until I was about 7 or 8, then i moved to CT. Just within the past few years I have started to follow football and I became a ravens fan. WHy I became a ravens fan I don't know, but the fact that it may have something to do with the fact that I used to live there (even though I was no football fan back then) makes me unsure of where I should be placed ont he political spread of homerism.
I'm a Steeler fan all the way. I bleed the black and gold!
But I have season tickets to the cardinals' games. I now have cardinals' jerseys and cheer on my home team.
In baseball, I'm a yankee fan but when i go to the diamondbacks stadium for a game, my boys and I cheer for the home team.
Is there something wrong there? I'm not claiming to be a cardinals fan in the same way some of these fans are here. But in some aspect, I am a cardinals fan. I think. And it's not being a bandwagon fan as neither one has been any good.
With the newspapers,TV, and radio always talking about local guys, you start to follow what is going on with your local team. Maybe that's why so many locals cheer for their hometown team?

Well, the straight bandwagoner is mainly a fan of a team because of one person...although it's normally a player. I suppose it could extend to owners also.

Well, since CT really doesn't have a team (I suppose the Pats are close), I guess we let you slip into "homer" status...although there is a possibility you could have some "HB" overtones because the Ravens have played well recently.

When did you become a Steelers' fan? Although I'm sure you are a true football fan, I might have to lump you into the general "bandwagoner" genus...At least I'm sure you stayed on the wagon, even when Louis Lipps was the #1 WR there.
The Cardinals love might be rise to a subspecies of "homers" that I didn't think about..."Transplanted Homers" (TH's? ) could very well be created by a move of some sort. Since you do see all the coverage and keep track of the players, you develop a new branch of loyalty to your new home. Interesting; I like it! We've found ourselves something new!

Ah...no doubt the date of "The Immaculate Reception."
Just in strictly classifying terms, I believe you qualify as a bandwagoner, but due to the undying loyalty afterwards, you don't go down as a "bad bandwagoner" in my book. I just don't like the people that stay on a horse for one year and move to another the next.

I'm not so sure about this. A "HB" is someone who is not even a sports fan. Does it look like I'm not a sports fan??
I didn't say you weren't...I'm just saying there might be a hint of "homer-bandwagoning" since you didn't have a team and decided to go with the place you were born with - but the team in question was also playing well which may have influenced your decision!
That's why I said that "normally" they aren't sports fans...maybe you're one of the exceptions.

True Blue Homer here. Born and raised in the DC area, dad would take me to Redskins games at RFK before I could hardly remeber all decked out in burgundy and gold. I'm also a bandwagon jumper, in the 70's when steelers were a powerhouse, Mean Joe Greene, LC Greenwood, Jack Ham, Jack Lambert, Franco, Rocky, Terry, I can still remember them all. I collected all the player cards I could to make the complete team, I still enjoy Steeler football and consider them my AFC favorite.
As far as Baseball, the senators didn't exist so I became an O's fan and havn't waivered. Though now, I do hope the Nationals do well.
It's like terp said,
It makes sense that you root for who you can watch on TV/ attend games for.
So lump me into whatever category you want, I'll still bleed B & G
