As best as I can tell, the Bears honestly thought Benson had the chance to be a real stud RB. TJones, while a good back, is not likely to rise to that level, so the thinking was to take the guy who could be the next great Bear RB ala Sayers, Payton, Neal Anderson, etc. In hindsight it is easy to say they should have picked a WR but I was very happy with the Bears pick on draft day (not now obviously).
I tend to side with Sixxgunn on blaming Benson. I have heard conflicting reports on the offer, but looking at the Bears recent history they went out and signed Muhammed and Ogunleye with no problem - I don't think we're dealing with the Bears being a bunch of tightwads in this situation.
Does anyone know if Cedric is a good baseball player?
This is all I could find on it, but an article I read quoted his baseball coach as saying he made the right choice to leave baseball. Maybe he should make the right choice and leave football too. Then he and Ricky can be beach bums together and collect cans for cash.
The San Antonio Express reports Texas junior RB Cedric Benson, one of the top rushers in college, is reportedly considering dropping out of football to concentrate on baseball. However, Texas HC Mack Brown said Benson has not indicated to him that he is leaving the team. "I talked to Cedric last week and I've never seen him this excited about coming back to football," Brown said. "He can't wait to get back to baseball, but he was really concerned about working out for his football, too." Benson rushed for 1,293 yards and 12 touchdowns for the Longhorns last season as a sophomore. He also played his first season of professional baseball, hitting .200 in nine games for Vero Beach, the Los Angeles Dodgers' Class A affiliate in the Gulf Coast League. Benson was hampered last season with turf toe during football season and acknowledged he was tired after playing both sports.
I was an athlete for a very long time and the joy in being an athlete was competing! Achieivng a life long dream of "playing" in the NFL is one thing. Thinking "I am about to be rich!" is another.
...so basically he's taking his ball and going home. I'm glad kids look up to these guys.

Cedric has lost me as a fan. The dude was a stud at Texas, and I've rooted for him since he had that awesome Freshmen year. I can't believe this kid is pulling this.
Cedric, if you're surfing these boards under the username BrutallyHuge, you lost a fan today.

There is no way losing Benson makes this team worse. He is a cancer. It is not a personal vendetta as you put it. I am a Bear fan, and I don't want a piece of garbage ruining my team ala TO or Ricky Williams. I have always hated me-first players like Keyshawn and Keenan McCardell, and every team in the league would be better off if they took the hardline stance the Bears are taking with this greedy flake who would likely pull a Ricky on us a year or two down the road anyway.

not unless they trade his rights away to another team. And nobody gonna seriously want him.
