Without a doubt.

If you really know you're stuff, you'll still end up with very good running backs.

I did an 8 team league with friends and I had the first pick and took Manning. (quarterbacks score high, and we have to start 2)

My starting running backs ended up as Deuce, Rudi, and Portis.

But it's just too hard passing on any of the top 3 (LT, Alexander, and Priest)

So you may be better off with one of them (depending on your league's scoring) if one falls to you.

I'd take Holmes/James, assuming Tomlinson and Alexander are gone. Guys like Plummer/Brooks/Delhomme/Hasselbeck can be had 5 or 6 rounds later. In some cases, 7 or 8 rounds later. That's what I would do, unless you expect at least 40 TD for Manning.

edit: something I forgot to add: If you start 2 RB plus a WR/RB(which I assume you do) I would definitely take a RB. If you only start 2 RB without the RB/WR option...then Manning is a good pick.

There's some voice telling me "no, don't take Manning before the 7th pick overall, no matter what."

So let's see, that would look like this:

1. LT2
2. Shaun A
3. Priest
4. Edge
5. Willis or Deuce
6. Deuce or Willis
7. Peyton, if you think you can get away with it

I think you can get away with it. There's not all that much separating the next 12 or 13 RBs, and I don't think you'll lose much by missing out on Tiki or Dom Davis and getting Steven Jackson, Ahman Green, or even, HEAVEN FORBID SINCE HE'S DUE TO BREAK DOWN FROM EXTREME GERIATRIC DECREPIDNESS ANY DAY NOW, Curtis (The NFL's Reigning Leading Rusher who's had a bagillion 1,000 yard seasons in a row) Martin.
