Brees or Flutie? This is the question that Marty put on everyone's lips this summer .... but IMHO it was very foolish. Here's why:
Flutie was the incumbent veteran, and he played well early last season. The safest course of action, for the team, for Brees, and especially for Marty, would have been to start Flutie.
Now all of the pressure is on Drew Brees, who has practically no experience. Is this really fair to Brees? If he struggles in the early games, against the easiest part of the Chargers schedule, and Flutie replaces him, Brees won't return for the rest of the season.
Preseason, for the veterans, is supposed to be a chance to work off the rust and get the juices flowing again. You might as well bench Super Bowl champ Tom Brady, who is also struggling in pre-season, as to bench Flutie. Sorry Marty ... pre-season isn't the real thing.
The Chargers will fall short of their goals, Brees and Flutie will play musical quarterback, and Marty will be looking for employment by the end of the season. Sadly.
