Thanks mostly in part to the computer games Starcraft and Counter-Strike, a semi-language was born on the internet, known as leet (aka 1337, L337, L33T, etc.) For the most part leet is just like english, except that you replace numbers and symbols for letters. For example, E=3. So by wagering $1337, he was referencing the internet culture of 1337.
