Warning: tough question ahead! 8-o

Two NFL teams other than Carolina nearly used the name Panthers. Once, fairly recently, the name was among the finalists in a fan contest. The other time, quite a while ago, the winner of a fan contest had been vetoed, and Panthers was chosen as a substitute (the veto was later dropped).

Name the two teams that came close to being called Panthers.

Jacksonville and Detroit- that was a really tough one

Jacksonville is correct, but while I certainly wouldn't argue with a Lions fan about Detroit trivia, I wasn't aware that Detroit held a fan contest to determine the team name. Correct me if I'm wrong?

Sorry Arlo. Actually there was a team called the Detroit Panthers in 1927. Maybe they were in another league besides the NFL

No, you're correct: the Detroit Panthers were an NFL team. They just weren't the descendants of today's Lions.

Good point, but that still leaves one team to be guessed... :-D

lemme guess since carolina is them and jacksonville was the other id say then it was probably the browns since they came about the same time frame and that name seemed popular around then

But not in the way you think... Actually, this situation came about much earlier - when the old Browns were looking for a name, all the way back in 1945.

Some folks just have such good instincts that even the wrong answers wind up being right... ;-D
