James Reed acknowledged having an altercation with Jonathan Vilma during the Jets' 27-7 loss to the Chiefs Sunday. Vilma didn't have to acknowledge it; his swollen left eye did it for him.
"It was a misunderstanding," Reed, the starting nose tackle, said yesterday. "It's football. A lot of guys get into arguments. It's in the past. I don't hold grudges."
In the fourth quarter, Reed and Vilma argued on the sideline, and a witness saw Reed punch Vilma in the face. Coach Herman Edwards said, "Family policy stays in the house. Done." But he lectured the team about "keeping our poise."
"That's just two brothers fighting," defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson said. "Isn't that what happens in families?" Vilma declined to discuss the matter.
