During the course of one season, a player managed to be both Pittsburgh's leading kicker, and Philadelphia's leading passer. He was horrid at both (16.7% FG conversion, and a QB rating of 44). Nonetheless, who is he, and why oh why would Philadelphia start Pittsburgh's reject kicker as their reject QB?

How about Tom Tupa? I'm not sure he's played for either of those teams though.

Nope nope.

Here's a hint: You're way off when you say you're not sure he played for *either of those teams*.

Sorry, it was no one by the name of Ed. It was also not anyone by the name of Matthew, Joseph, or Bill.

In 1943 the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers, due to war and dearth of players, combined for the season. Roy Zimmerman had a QB rating of 44 and a FG pct of 16.7% to lead the Steagles that season.

Accepted as answer by Orange and Blue on Fri Sep 05, 2003 4:55 pm EST.

Right indeed, Moochie.

I always thought the Phil-Pitt Steagles one of the greatest (and most inane) chapters in the long history of both storied teams. That year was actually Philadelphia's first winning season ever, and only Pittsburgh's second. After the year was over, Pittsburgh joined with the Cincinatti Cardinals and became "Card-Pitt". I love how they combined one team name with one city name, making it neither the team nor the city. They should have called it the Cin-Pitt Cardelers. True to Cardinal form, they went 0-10.

Inanity is the life’s blood of trivia!
My understanding was that they wanted to call them the Cin-Pitt but were worried about a possible copyright infringement suit from SinCity! They should have called them the SteelBirds. That would have been a great football name.
