Steve Smith, Coincidence?

Postby mystykoekaki » Mon Oct 10, 2005 12:27 pm

Wonder if you guys have noticed a trend that I have noticed over the past 5 weeks of Smith's playing. Here it is if you havent noticed:

Week 1: 138 yards and 1 TD

Week 2: 34 yards and 0 TD

Week 3: 170 yards and 3 TD

Week 4: 12 yards and 0 TD

Week 5: 119 yards and 2 TD

It almost seems that he is playing an on/off type of scheme, should I be worried about next week or is this just a coincidence?

I don't think you can read anything into it, except that Smith is a little bit different of a receiver than a guy like TO who ALWAYS gets his he's an integral part of the offense and is used in possession situations. Smith is a big play receiver, and so some streakiness is to be expected.

The other annoying on-again, off-again thing is Branch and Givens for New England... its like they switch having 100 yard weeks every other week... its been going on since last year.

I would say the important factor isn't as much the odd/even weeks as it is whether the Panthers are losing or winning.

New Orleans Lost 20-23
New England Won 27-17
@Miami Lost 24-27
Green Bay Won 32-29
@Arizona Won 24-20

The only one that didn't end up as a loss was yesterday's game, and they had to come from behind to win. I would definitely play him when the Panthers are expected to lose the game.

or you could look at it as he faced some good d's and schemes in those bad games and some awful d's in the others (with the exception of maybe miami)

Week 1: 138 yards and 1 TD vs NO

Week 2: 34 yards and 0 TD vs New England

Week 3: 170 yards and 3 TD vs miami

Week 4: 12 yards and 0 TD vs Green Bay double and triple covered

Week 5: 119 yards and 2 TD vs arizona

miami is the one wildcard of that group. they are good but moulds/evans/holcombe did well against them yesterday and they do have a younger secondary.

No, I don't think that's it, nor do I think it's about him being different than TO. I think it's the nature of the position, that there is some unpredictability. TO had a crap week this week, and had one that is below his skill earlier in the year.

This, and the number of available wide receivers is, IMO, why most leagues play 3 WR positions per team.

I wouldn't be worried about anyone who is producing as well as Smith. If you were right, and he was "on and off" in a pattern, wouldn't you still take him, compared to most of the alternatives? I know I would... if I could have someone I KNEW was going to make me 20-40 points every other week, be sure, he's one of my starters.

:-o

Good point. :-D

I guess what I meant to say is when they're losing he tends to be much more valuable.
