I saw a blurb on sports illustrated about how a Kansas City newspaper refused to refer to the washington redskins by their nickname because they considered it a racial slur. I understand that many people take offense to the name and it probably should be changed. That being said, the same newspaper had no problem printing 'Chiefs' in the article claiming that it had no racial or ethnic connotations. The paper claimed that the nickname is supposed to be a reference to the KC mayor who brought the franchise to town. It strikes me as incredibly irresponsible journalism not to call out the home team in this case. To claim that the 'Chiefs' nickname in no way refers to Native Americans is ludicrous. While it might not be as racially insensitive as 'Redskins', it isn't completely innocent either.
Carrying on from this, how much longer do you guys think it will be until teams like the 'skins have to change their names?
