KC paper refuses to print 'redskins'

Postby dcsportsfan » Thu Oct 20, 2005 1:15 pm

I saw a blurb on sports illustrated about how a Kansas City newspaper refused to refer to the washington redskins by their nickname because they considered it a racial slur. I understand that many people take offense to the name and it probably should be changed. That being said, the same newspaper had no problem printing 'Chiefs' in the article claiming that it had no racial or ethnic connotations. The paper claimed that the nickname is supposed to be a reference to the KC mayor who brought the franchise to town. It strikes me as incredibly irresponsible journalism not to call out the home team in this case. To claim that the 'Chiefs' nickname in no way refers to Native Americans is ludicrous. While it might not be as racially insensitive as 'Redskins', it isn't completely innocent either.
Carrying on from this, how much longer do you guys think it will be until teams like the 'skins have to change their names?

Give me a break, KC plays at Arrowhead Stadium. No-brainer there, they have some gall claiming there's no Native American connotation.

As for changing the nicknames, every Sunday I'm surprised the 'Skins haven't changed the name yet. I have no problem with using historical Native American tribes like Illini, that's not really a slap in the face like "Redskins" sure seems to be. :-t

IMO, using tribe names isn't that much different from using names for other groups of people: Senators, Minutemen, Fighting Irish, Hoosiers, etc. Kind of an honor.

The whole name thing is ridiculous...

next people will say that "Eagles" (yes, the animals) are being discriminated against because we're naming teams after them.

Maybe all the teams will be colors like the Browns... but then again, I don't think the Browns are named after the color... maybe we can just say they are. If we do start naming teams after colors... are there 32 colors?

That doesn't count all the college teams... we may have to invent new colors just to play football again.

I'm tired of seeing "slippery slope" arguments used in the cafe, and dan is a respected cafe member, so I don't want to be too hard on him, but they are simply logically invalid.

How about the fact that when polled, the majority of American Indians dont take offense to the names. Should that be taken into consideration or should the minority who do take offense to it have more power than the majority who dont?

Who really cares?

If you are going to get sensitive about team-names..Then god forbid you actually watch a sport where one of the objectives is to hit someone.

The people who care about this kind of crap need to go watch golf. (Good sport btw, not a bash on golf)

It will be changed within the next 15 years mainly because once someone starts the "Change the Redskins name" campaign, all of the bandwagon cry babies will jump on because they don't have anything else to cry about.
