Running Over Your O-Line: Illegal?

Postby benjapage » Mon Oct 24, 2005 11:03 am

i presume it's illegal for a ball-carrier to run up the backs of his offensive lineman and jump over the defensive front. what is the corresponding penalty?

in some short-yardage situations, i've ruminated upon how cool it would be to see the ball-launch up and over the line instead of through it.

no feedback? is this type of play, in fact, illegal?

I don't know the exact wording of the rule, but its something along the lines of using your own player to gain an advantage. You usually see it called when a player trying to block a field goal jumps off the linemen in front of him, but I think the same rule would apply in your situation.

It's called "leaping" on field goal tries, not sure if the same applies to the situation described.

Looking over the rules, there's a 10 yard penalty for: "4. Helping the runner."

There are 15 yard penalties for "Leaping" and "Leverage."

Here's a funny rule:

Touchdown Awarded (Palpably Unfair Act)

1. When Referee determines a palpably unfair act deprived a team of a touchdown. (Example: Player comes off bench and tackles runner apparently en route to touchdown

I would love to see that.

i've seen it happen before...but I think it was in a college game. some dude was screaming down the sideline and somebody stepped out and threw a shoulder into him. it was funny because he was totally blindsided by it. i think they awarded the TD too.
seems like it was at least 15 years ago.

if you think the NFL rulebook has some big words or confusing phrases try reading the rules of golf. *shudder*

I see some rbs keeping a hand on their blockers, is this to tell the blocker that they're still behind them? I would assume that this is allowed, but actually using another player as a "leapfrog" or something is not.

Even still, players do go flying into the endzone (priest often leaps over the pile into the endzone.)
ADMIN edit: please note that the overall sig limit is 12k - thanks!

interesting. in one of the games yesterday, the ball carrier, after a pick (i.e a defensive back) was about to fall over. One of his teammates grabbed him by the shirt and dragged him up to his feet. I think the guy ran for a score after that... did anyone see that? is that "helping the runner"?

I'm not sure. The rule is incredibly vague.

I wish the NFL rules were like Golf Rules....extremely detailed.
