Ya, the MCL is huge, protects the knee from buckling inward, and only completely tears in something like a car accident, in which case surgery is needed. In a football-related injury the MCL will tear partially and the prognosis is rest until there is no longer discomfort - scar tissue mends the tear.
The PCL (that Holt injured) is much different. It's rather small and criss-crosses the ACL through the middle of the knee, both serve the same function of stability. If the ACL tears surgery is most oftened needed because of its size. In contrast, when the PCL tears surgery isn't necessary because it's so small, so long as the ACL is still intact. Scar tissue helps to mend the tear in the PCL after a few weeks. That's where Holt's at right now. He'll probably wear a brace for a little while until he becomes fed up with it and his knee feels stable on its own. It's not as serious as these reports are making it out to be.
