what OS are you running?

Postby moonhead » Thu Dec 01, 2005 2:04 pm

right now i'm running windows Xp on my dell laptop...but I just installed a new larger hard drive and partitioned it in half...so I'm thinking about running a dual boot with linux.

any linux users out there with a recommendation?
a friend at work suggested ubuntu, i think....i am also interested in freeBSD.

Windows 2000, I'm not a geek so I don't have much demand for anything more.

I'm currently running XP as i'm sure most people are.

As for Ubuntu... I used it during my final college capstone as part of a network for our FTP server. It was pretty easy to install and configure b/c the driver/software packages you need are just a few clicks and they installed through a menu on the desktop. Besides Ubuntu, I've used Red Hat and it was ok. Nothing special though. I've also heard that Suze is pretty good but i have never used it.

The Fedora core is not bad. Or you could just fill the entire extra partition with porn ... 8-o

I've been running FBSD for many years and think it's a great os. It's gotten more user friendly over the years and the install is quite easy, just check the docs ahead of time to be sure about hdwr compatibility.

so, updated: after about 2.5 years of twidling my thumbs and playing with different incarnations of xp and vista, i took the plunge last night. installed teh ubuntu. i like it so far. some things are difficult to grasp. the command line procedures are not that intuitive. i am still learning that stuff. i can't seem to get my webcam to work. but that's not a huge deal.

i installed the 64bit version of ubuntu. that has created a problem with installing flash player. i do have a friend that is a unix admin, and he's been helping me through some of this stuff. without him i would have been totally lost.

but i'm having fun tinkering.

because, i know you're all so interested. i would have updated the moonblog, but that somehow got disappeared. :-o

xp pro 32 bit

when i built my comp 64 bit was still a little bit wonky with drivers and apps and the performance difference was actually pretty even up even with a dual core setup so i chose 32 bit to keep my headaches down with trying to get things to work.
