Robert Benjamin of the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater is redrawing the shape of our galaxy. Using the Spitzer Space Telescope, which can see through obscuring clouds of gas and dust, he has demonstrated that the Milky Way has a complicated S-shaped form known as a barred spiral. Related work shows that our galaxy's nucleus looks rather like a football.

i don't think he's changing anything. i had an astronomy class last year and this is exactly what we learned. milky way = barred spiral galaxy.
