Robert Benjamin of the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater is redrawing the shape of our galaxy. Using the Spitzer Space Telescope, which can see through obscuring clouds of gas and dust, he has demonstrated that the Milky Way has a complicated S-shaped form known as a barred spiral. Related work shows that our galaxy's nucleus looks rather like a football.

Well, it was just that the nucleus of the galaxy looks like a football. I get this image of a spiral pass soaring through the universe. Never mind...
