Yep, it's real all right. I saw it on TV.
It's one of the excavators at the Hambach mine in Germany, where they dig up lignite. I can't find any other good pictures of the thing, though, which is surprising. They're pretty huge and pretty cool. You'd think there'd be more pictures.

They actually 'saw' through the dirt and rock with that thing?! That's amazing. I guess I'm surprised more by the primitive concept and look of it.
