Browns to Fire Savage

Postby JEWMAH9701 » Fri Dec 30, 2005 2:45 pm

Sources: Browns ready to fire GM Savage

The Cleveland Browns plan to fire senior vice president and general manager Phil Savage, NFL sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen on Friday.

The split is over "philosophical differences," primarily salary cap management. The announcement could come as early as Friday, Mortensen reported. Savage could not be reached for comment.

Atlanta Falcons chief administration officer Ray Anderson is a candidate to replace Savage, who joined the Browns on Jan. 6.

The Browns, who are 5-10 in coach Romeo Crennel's first season in Cleveland, play Baltimore on Sunday.

Savage spent the past nine seasons with the Baltimore Ravens organization, including 2003-04 as the Ravens' director of player personnel. He is known as one of the NFL's top talent evaluators.

In Baltimore, the 14-year veteran of the league, worked directly with general manager Ozzie Newsome to oversee college and pro scouting. While there, Savage was involved in many of the day-to-day operations of the team and also negotiated contracts of late-round draft picks.

Man, I don't understand this at all. Something had to happen that we'll probably never know about. Only in Cleveland.....

I've been hearing things about Savage wanting to spend a good portion of that cap money to bring RayRay here.

But, it looks like we've got a butting of heads in the front office w/ more things than that. Time to put our turnaround on hold for 10 more years. Damn you John Collins!

I was just listening to Kenny Rhoda (SP?) on WKNR. He made some calls and says that Savage and The Browns CEO have been butting heads all during Savages tenure.

He further stated that Savage sent a memo out when he got there stating if you are not on the football side of operations, your input will not be taken into account, and this pissed Mr. CEO off.

For those that dont know, the CEO was the person who was in charge of the halftime show with the "Wardrobe Malfunction" and is widly considered a joke in the NFL.

Good think Learner let him call the shots.

This is the worst thing that could happen to the Browns right now.

What i'm hearing from Roda and 1100 radio that COLLINS/LERNER have taked to Phil Savage about upgrading the contract negotiating area and told him he pretty much had to accept it. Kinda an ultimatium, IMO
