Crimedog brings up an interesting point. I figured that since Maroney, Barber III, and Russell had been sharing carries, that Maroney didn't have that many carries, but that's not true.
Maroney has more carries this year than any back for the 8 BCS teams. Maroney has 281 carries and 17 receptions on the year. That's almost 300 touches. In comparison, only Pittman for OSU and Darrius Walker for Notre Dame have more than 200 touches. And neither of them come within 50 touches of Maroney.
In comparison though, Deangelo Williams has over 300 carries alone this year, had 300+ as a junior, and had 200+ as a sophomore.
The scouts though haven't mention anything about this though as Williams is still being mentioned as a top 10 pick.
This brought me to look at previous years to see how touches influence draft picks, and there really isn't any correlation. Cadillac had about 250 carries last year and Ronnie Brown had almost 200 touches. Cedric Benson had 300+ carries. All three of those major backs were taken in the first round and no one said anything about their durability or the number of touches in college.
From this I think that it's safe to conclude that the number of touches a back has in college really does not affect their draft position. When applying this to the Lendale White case it probably won't be something looked at by NFL scouts if he stays another year, yet more serious is the possibility of a serious injury playing in the defensive powerhouse conference that is the Pac-1 (and no, I didn't forget the 0, it's the Pac-1, not the Pac-10).
For now at least, I can't find complete college tallies for past RBs...probably just because it's 2AM and for some reason I'm still awake. But here's a list of first round RBs taken the last eight years...some brutal picks in there, huh?
2004: Steven Jackson, Chris Perry, Kevin Jones
2003: Willis McGahee, Larry Johnson
2002: William Green, TJ Duckett
2001: LaDainian Tomlinson, Deuce McCallister, Michael Bennett
2000: Jamal Lewis, Thomas Jones, Ron Dayne, Shaun Alexander, Trung Canidate 1999: Edgerrin James, Ricky Williams
1998: Curtis "I Don't Have A" Enis, Fred Taylor, Robert Edwards, John Avery
'Twas a fun year, fellas.

Nice post man
Yeah, but none of them are even close to the Ryan Leaf pick. Some were telling the colts to take them over Manning.
