In this league, tackles don't mean jack to a normal person. They want to see the sacks. Merriman had 10 of them. Double digit sacks for any player in one year is a big accomplishment (only 16 total defenders did it this year), and only two LB's got to that number. Merriman was one of them; the other was Joey Porter.
He won the award on that stat and the several punishing hits he gave out this year. Tatupu probably had the more balanced and helpful year to his team, but those are the type of guys are the ones who don't get the accolades and just do their thing.

Good call, Mercer. I think both guys are deserving, but I probably would've leaned towards Tatupu because his team's in the playoffs right now. Can't really be down on Merriman though, after getting to watch him make a couple monster hits in the week 17 game.
'Twas a fun year, fellas.

........

While it's certainly up for debate who deserved the award there is absolutely no question that Merriman is the best defensive player from the draft. Of course Tatupu had more tackles, he's a friggin MLB. Merriman is an OLB in a 3-4. Apples and oranges. Since Merriman, Tatupu and Thurman were all legit choices I think you have to ask yourself who is the best player of them? It's Merriman by a country mile.

Mercer and Vixtor hit the nail on the head....not much more to add than that. All I can say is that I can't wait to see what "Lights Out" does next year, along with Tatupu and Therman.
Doesn't it suck to get beat at Fantasy Football...by a girl?
I don't like the nickname "Lights Out." It sounds like it's trying too hard.
Sounds like one of those nicknames you give yourself. "C'mon, Georgie, I want to be known as 'Lights Out!' You gave yourself the nickname of 'Unstoppable' and Franklin is already using 'The Beast.' It's time for 3rd period gym...I might do a chin-up this time!!"
