Are you seriously ripping on Michael Mann? The guy is one of the few quality big name directors around. Heat may be a 3 hour long film, but it's edge of your seat the whole time.
wait a minute. have you seen heat? that movie is over at the bank robbery...yet it goes on for more. end it already!
the insider? ugh.
collateral? just a piece of crap.
i haven't seen the aviator, so, maybe that's a good one.

I'm with moon on this one -- Mann's films madden me. They always feel epic, but are excrutiating to watch. His knack for imagery and "feel" is great, but he sucks at telling stories.

Well, everyone's entitled to their opinions. First time I saw Manhunter I nearly freaked out. As scary as Silence of the Lambs may be, Manhunter did it for me back in 1986. Creepy film. Every film he's directed since then, I've loved. Heat is in my top five all time and everything that happens after the bank robbery is warranted, IMO. Eh, I guess we'll just agree to disagree about Mann's work.

As DDD said, to each their own, but the movies you just rattled off right there were enjoyable. Aviator is a bit of a departure simply because it's a biography though I thought he did a fine job in capturing the eccentricities that made Howard Hughes.
