I'd also still like to do a separate IDP draft if everyone thinks that's a good idea.

I know we'll hash things out once we get the room. I just wanted to throw that out there and see what everyone thinks.

Well....it really only works in that league because it is just a 3 player keeper league and we are just doing enough rounds to get our initial keepers. Not sure if it would work in a dynasty though....if you could find a way we can definitely consider it though.

I was just throwing it out as another possible option. I've stated my opinion about being in favor of a later draft, without a separate rookie draft. I thought this was a good compromise.

I see why it works well with the 3 player keeper league, but why wouldn't it work well with a dynasty league? I don't see the difference/problem. Might be a stupid question but this is the 1st dynasty league I'll be in so maybe I'm just missing something.

I'm just a little confused as to why we should have a separate rookie draft. Is it just to add another dimension to the drafting process? Are there other reasons for a separate rookie draft? Why should all the owners be forced to draft a certain # of rookies?

The difference is that we are having a 6 round draft purely for the point of picking our 3 keepers. The other 3 we draft we will drop and repick from all the players including the rookies. So with a dynasty that's not really a possibility to do it the same way.

I see the difference. I didn't know that you would be dropping 3 of the 6 picks after picking the 3 keepers.

I'd still prefer a later draft, but why wouldn't it be possible to have a partial draft before the NFL draft and then finish our draft after the NFL draft with the remaining undrafted players plus the rookies added to the pool?

Opinions on the reasoning of a separate rookie draft?

I like a separate rookie draft in the first year because that is what we will be doing for every year in the future (unless FAs will also go through a yearly draft process?). Having an early draft then a rookie draft makes the first year more like subsequent years in that the bulk of your roster is determined before the rookie draft.

Logistically, I would think that it would work the same way as the keeper league described above - we would use the early draft to fill up our rosters, then after the NFL draft, drop 2-3 players and do a 2-3 round rookie draft.

I think the key to an early draft is that you have to pick based more on player talent level than the situation they are in, since that situation could change between now and September. In that regard, your decision-making process will be more like that of a real NFL GM. This interests me because I am planning to use my fantasy football successes on a job application for the Saints GM position in a couple years, so I want my experience to be as close to the real thing as possible ;-) .

Yes, this is along the lines of what I was thinking. I think it is a good idea to be doing the same thing each year so having a seperate rookie draft would be ideal. We may need to have 3 drafts then if we want to have an IDP draft as well, assuming we even use IDPs. We may not....but none of this will be decided until we have our own forum. It was supposed to be today but I haven't heard from Arlo yet today.

Sooooo you want to be the Steelers GM? I would think that job would be much more difficult to get than the Saints job, but I already called dibs on the Saints job, so I guess you can try for the Steelers :-D

sorry to switch topics here, but i think another sticking point will be bench space and the rules regarding an IR list, if we decide to have one. Since this is a dynasty league, and half the fun is drafting and keeping rookies through the learning curve, I think it might be better to have a bench that is at least 12 players, and/or have the option to place some players on IR. If we don't, the rookie draft won't take on the same signifigance, because no one will be able to stow the rook's away on their rosters. three rounds is 36 players, so would you consider rostering the last, say, six players taken in that draft if it meant you would be screwed if injury struck one or more of your starters?

And I'm all for early draft, then rookie draft, a seperate IDP draft, 3 IDP spots and one DEFST, and I'd prefer no flex or utility spot at all.

So let's get a room, and bring on the voting!
