Yeah... as stated, the Redskins do this yearly. Steinbre... er... Snyder wil just work his cap magic once more, cut a lot of his older scrub players, probably Ramsey and LaVar as well, and they'll be fine again. And not having a 1st rounder also helps.

And every year its not always "scrubs" that they lose. I believe last year they couldn't retain Fred Smoot and Antonio Pierce. Starters, neither of which were scrubs, nor old. The year before that they had to cut Trotter, who had been excellent for them in his two years at Washington. The real question is, who will the impact players they lose this year be?

Whose model would you rather follow....the Redskins or the Patriots and the Steelers? The Pats and Steelers both have been consistent for so long in large part due to how they handle their salary cap. The constant overpaying for veterans does several things...it slows down the development of your young talent and it hurts your chemistry. Every year there are going to be a bunch of vets coming in and a bunch of vets going out. Every team should learn from and follow how the Pats and Steelers do things.

While I'm not disagreeing with you, Pitt did have an off-year in 2003... going 6-10. Also, other successful teams have gone the other route and been successful in their own respects, too.
Carolina has done reasonably well in recent years, and have heavily pursued big name free agents like Ken Lucas and Mike Wahle just last year. The Eagles, except for of course last year, had a large amount of success largely in part to having big name talent. Teams like Denver have also been pretty well off, going for players like Champ Bailey, drafting Clinton Portis, etc.
So yes, the conservative route works for some teams. And the aggressive route works for others. It depends largely in part to coaching, the owner's philosophies, etc.
I agree with others in this I don't epect to see Lavar or Ramsey in a Redskins uni come 2006 kickoff. Both of those guys will help the cap and with some other trims here and there I expect the Skins to be fine without doing anything MAJOR. We will see though... Snyder always finds a way around money problems, with nothing other than money of course!

Well, just to add some more fuel to the fire...I found this on Rotoworld:
"The Redskins aren't fit to do much in free agency.
ESPN's Len Pasquarelli says a cap insider reports there are only two players on the current Washington roster who will bring the team cap relief if they're cut. Releasing some of the team's big-name players would actually increase the cap number. He even surmises the Redskins might have to play with as many as 15-20 rookies, all earning the minimum salary, to squeeze close to the cap."
It's an ESPN insider article, of which I cannot read, but if this is true the cap situation might be a bigger headache than it has been in past years. It would be difficult to force players to restructure their contracts if they know that being cut would actually cost the organization more money than it would save them - the players might play hardball in contract negotiations if they know this. Just more food for thought.

LaVar and Ramsey...
Neither of which played very much in '05....
a very solid point, but given their current salaries, I would say both are supposed to fit the realm of "impact players," and will likely be that on other teams (assuming Ramsey is given another chance to start).

I'm sure he will. There's plenty of teams desperate enough for a QB. Whether or not he last very long as a starter is another story. The Jets for one if they let Penny go.
