49ers | Team saves $5.5 million in salary

Dennis Georgatos, of the Mercury News, reports the San Francisco 49ers shed $6.8 million from their 2006 payroll, including $5.5 million in salary CB Ahmed Plummer would have been paid this season if they had not released him. As previously noted, the team also released WR Johnnie Morton and DE Chris Cooper.

They're also letting Julian Peterson go. Probably their best player, but too many injury problems.

i haven't read that we are "letting him go".

if he goes its because hes walking. its smart for us not to tag him again because he isn't worth what a tag will cost. he wasn't the same this year after the injury. i won't say he's not a great player. hes versatile and a presence. i just don't think (even with the cap we have) that we can give him that tag.

They did indeed release Plummer. Truth be told, he is a #2 CB in his true role and we had always needed to use him in the #1 capacity. He'll go somewhere and be productive.
