Steelers Make A Couple Cuts

Postby VaderFin » Fri Mar 03, 2006 4:01 pm

Nine-year veteran quarterback Tommy Maddox, who resurrected his NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers but lost his starting job to then-rookie Ben Roethlisberger in 2004, was released on Friday, as the Super Bowl XL champions continued to make moves to get under the 2006 salary cap.

The Steelers also released 13-year veteran cornerback Willie Williams. The two transactions, which created $1.585 million in additional cap space, had been anticipated since the end of the season.

I don't think either of those are a surprise.

no surprise. Tommy sealed his fate against Jax early last year and Willie wasnt even playing towards the end of the year with the emergance of Mc Fadden and Coclough... They still need to drop Duce and acquire another back via FA or draft.

****edit****

Looks like Duce is staying.

From the Post Gazette:

Ending the worst-kept secret in Pittsburgh, the Steelers released veterans Tommy Maddox and Willie Williams on Friday.
This came a day after the team restructured the contract of veteran running back Duce Staley and extended a one-year, $1.55 million tender to restricted free-agent cornerback Ike Taylor.

The team is also trying to restructure deals for Pro Bowl center Jeff Hartings and his backup, Chukky Okobi, who could opt to play elsewhere if Hartings agrees to modify his current agreement.

The Steelers, like the rest of the NFL, are awaiting word on whether the collective bargaining agreement will be extended by midnight Monday

both these cuts were expected. maddox is well past his prime, and williams is too. he has dropped down the depth charts of a young, talented secondary. the steelers will draft a qb on the second day to replace maddox, and there may be no need to replace williams.

Yeah, not surprising. Maddox made out like a bandit...got a raise on his last contract, stunk it up, and now he can go back to selling insurance. :-)
