Jets | Team closing in on Ramsey trade Fri, 10 Mar 2006 05:31:26 -0800
Mark Cannizzaro, of the New York Post, reports two sources familiar with the goings on between the New York Jets and Washington Redskins, told The Post last night that the Jets and Jimmy Sexton, the agent for Washington backup QB Patrick Ramsey, have been actively working on the parameters for a trade that would bring Ramsey to New York. Talk is the Jets would give the Redskins a fifth-round draft pick in next month's NFL Draft as well as a possible conditional pick in the 2007 draft, depending on how much and how well Ramsey plays. That pick could be as high as a third-round pick should Ramsey start a certain number of games and perform to a certain level.
I heard about this on Mike and Mike this morning too. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds if it does happen - will Ramsey play well enough to take over the starting job? Will the Jets still be looking to take a QB in the draft (I still don't think you can be content with Ramsey and Penny as your choices for QB of the future)?
Ramsey is not a bad QB... He just spent too much of his formative time in the NFL under Steve Spurrier... Spurrier had Ramsey getting sacked 4-5 times a game, and the plays he wasn't sacked on, he was at least knocked down...
It's hard to get a read on a guy who has had protection that crappy... Similar to the situation David Carr has been in...
Given the right kind of protection, and a viable running game behind him, I think Ramsey could be a 3300 yard - 20 TD - 15 INT kind of QB....
But, then again, so could Chad Pennington....
What this trade does, is it gives the Jets a back-up plan for Pennington, and provides some competition in camp, but what it does not do is give the Jets a franchise QB for the future....
If I were the Jets, I would still be looking to land a top-flight FA, like Culpepper or Brees, OR I would be looking to trade up for Leinart....

I agree.
And is it just me, or is TIm Couch the same way? This is a guy that never smelled a chance in the NFL due to crappy coaching and the world's most piss-poor protection of all time.
Anyways, I like this trade for the Jets. Gives them a product with a lot of potential ... I think Ramsey can still "get 'er done," just not on the Skins.
