As a follow-up to Mike D's article in the Courier last Sunday, he wanted let us know the latest on the situation.
Mike said that three very good sources confirmed his Sunday story that the New Orleans Saints will go the extra mile in trying to secure the services of Carolina Panthers OLB Will Witherspoon. The sources feel as though the Saints will make a "huge" money play within the first few hours of free agency to get Will's attention.
One player source told him that Will will make a money decision first, with considerations about team second. He feels as though the Saints are close to being a good football team and that he would enjoy returning to the Deep South and being under Gary Gibbs.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are going to be major players, but the Saints seem determined to land Witherspoon quickly and not get caught holding the bag, like last season with former Washington Redskins MLB Antonio Pierce, who signed quickly with the New York Giants.
boy am i excited! i think this guy is going to explode in this league, and he is just hitting his stride. at 25-years-old, he has a number of seasons ahead of him. i think the saints are making a statement here early in free agency. we have the money to snag him, and we desperately need a LB. also, gary gibbs -- i think -- is going to have a ton of pull on these defensive players. this is going to be exciting to watch.
Witherspoon could turn out to be one of the best possible players to sign. Getting him would be a boon, and definitely show the new coaching staff is committed to revamping that defense.

I thought they drafted an elite Tackle prospect last year? I'd figure if they got Brees and Witherspoon they'd look to trade down a little and take Mario Edwards or AJ Hawk, maybe even go after Vernon Davis.
sorry will will, but why the hell would he want to go to new orleans..... they have no QB, a horrid defense, and basically still don't have a reliable stadium situation..... think this thru will and come back to carolina- I know he's smart enough.

Jamaal Brown is very good, but he is a right tackle, and much more of a road-paver than a finesse pass-blocker. You would be hard-pressed to find a better complement to Brown than D'Brick.
Gandy is not bad, but he is certainly no D'Brick and could stand to be upgraded. Mario Williams wouldn't make much sense with Howard, Grant, and Smith already causing a logjam at DE and Zac Hilton looked good at the end of last year. I think after D'Brick, Hawk is the only realistic pick for the Saints (obviously Leinart if they don't sign Brees).

Darren Howard is not coming back. He said he would rather retire than play for the Saints again. He hated being franchised, so the Saints are letting him go this year. But still, Grant and Will Smith are a young, talented duo that are improving every year, so Mario Williams still would not make much sense.
