You have to live in terrible conditions to get it, at least from my impressions. The bird flu does kinda scare me though...

I hear ya. I'm a little concerned about that myself - mostly because I have a three-year-old.

It hasn't made the "jump" yet, and remember the hype SARS got, so I won't worry too much about it until then.

If we're lucky they'll have an innoculation to Bird Flu here in the next year or so and it won't be a pandemic.

The Bird Flu is the media's "Disease of the Year." No one you know will probably ever contract it, it is very similar to the SARS scare and West Nile. People get freaked out when they see the numbers, but you hav eto remember the numbers are proportional to the amount of people living in the country. Of course more people have West Nile now than ever ... there are more people in America now!

I find the wording of this whole thing a little funny...

It is not contagious, but humans get it from fleas, who get it from rodents....

Doesn't that make it contagious? If a rat can pass it to a flea, who can pass it to a human, where does the non-contagious part come in?

I mean, it may not be airborne, and it may not be communicable through touch, but it sure as a mother is contagious... In the same way that AIDS is contagious....

Or does the word contagious imply transmission by means other than blood?

It becomes contagious when left untreated and it becomes pneumonic plague.

It was a joke. But i do find it odd that something that isnt contagious killed 25 million people. Its still contagious its just what it mutates into.

exactly, it's contagious in that sense, but it's not airborne. Ebola is one of the nastiest and is the most deadly infection known to man, but as of now it is very hard to contract and spread. There has to be blood to blood contact.

I believe it's only contagious if it is left untreated.

But the bird flu is coming!
Keep it lit.

I did watch a History channel special on this, but I was kind of dozing in and out on the couch so I can't say how accurate my account of it is. I remember them saying Bubonic may have only been one of the reasons all those people were kicking the bucket, and that they believe there was a second plague going on at the same time with similar symptoms, but very easily spread. Could be that it was that pneumonic thing or whatever it morphed into, but I do know they said there was more to it than just the Bubonic plague killing everyone because it couldn't have possibly spread that fast. I thought the best part was when they said the Mongols (or some barbarian tribe) would chuck the infected bodies over the walls of their enemies cities and wait for everyone to die! Biological warfare at it's funniest!
