Beginers guide too making sigs....

Hey I just got photoshop and I really want too learn how to make sigs.

Right now all I know how to do is use the paint bucket and create new layers. Once I have my new layer what should I do....

For example I have a pure black first layer.... What should I do now to make a cooler backround?

What are some things for me to explore/ expierment

i usually start filling it with black and brushing over on a new layer with white. then another new layer with black. and continue until it's a nice balance. but when i started, i had no knowledge of brushing. check out http://www.deviantart.com for that. otherwise check this out (it's how i learned):

You'll eventually fall into a style you like There's some good places like good-tutorials for specific stuff. Mostly just mess around. The first thing I ever learned was just to take filters and mess with them. Filter>Render>Difference Clouds and then apply another filter of brushed strokes and sharpen. You'll get the hang of it and it's really fun. You can tell a difference, I didn't start making sigs until December and you can see progression on my sig page(oldest are on the top) You can see it on Chargers too. Good luck man

I'd strongly reccomend you stay away from starting out with straight brushing for your backgrounds because you'll get hooked on it and be missing out on so many of the other tools in Photoshop if you do.

A good, simple background to start off with is one made up of a gradient, some motion blurs (the blurs can be of anything... they just add some color and pizzaz to the backgroud. It's easiest to just use the player cutout itself), and some patterns on top. Then if you want you can add the lighting effects filer and some brushing for finishing touches
