Wasn't is rumored they were supposed to be Wookies instead? I thought I had heard somewhere the Ewoks came about as they couldn't find enough tall people to play a hoard of Wookies.
yeah that would have made the story work better. i don't know if there is any truth to it. but those little fuzzy things are no match for imperial walkers and AT-ATs. no matter how inept the stormtroopers are.

It probably would have been viewed much better in the fans' eyes had they used Wookies instead. It's not they couldn't have gone to the NBA and used the players to be the wookies.
The word "Ewok" is not spoken in the film but it is used in the film's credits. George Lucas intended that a primitive race should overthrow the Empire in Return of the Jedi, and he had originally planned to use Wookiees, but decided against it after it had been established that Chewbacca was proficient with technology. His answer was to create a new race called Ewoks, which is "Wookiee" with the syllables reordered.

I guess I'm a minority in that I liked the films just the way they came out. Star Wars, Empire and Jedi. Jedi kinda sucked, so really it's just the first two. I do not acknowledge the existence of the "newer" trilogy.
