People claim that humans are naturally born to swim, or something like that, but if that's the case, why do we need lessons? Anyway, there is not a more helpless situation, imo, than the thought of drowning, being trapped under ice, etc. Humans are completely out of their element in the water compared to the animals that occupy it.

Yeah, that's weird. I guess living in the Midwest I never developed a fear of water - there's not much around here except for a few sandpit lakes.
When we lived out in California we went to the ocean a few times, but aside from being too damned cold I wasn't afraid of it.
I guess growing up in Michigan, where you cant throw a stone without hitting a lake kinda clouds my vision on water. I grew up fishing and swimming in the lakes so i really love the water.
