I have concerns about these musicians being "bands."
Bob Marley & The Wailers
Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
David Bowie & The Spiders From Mars
Joe Satriani
Nine Inch Nails
Ozzy Osbourne
Simon and Garfunkle
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Bob Marley, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Joe Satriani, Ozzy Osbourne and Tom Petty are almost universally known as solo artists with backing bands. Does that qualify them for this contest?
Simone and Garfunkie are a duo. I'm pretty sure they do not qualify.
Nine Inch Nails is pretty much a solo project by Trent Reznor. Reznor plays all the instruments on the albums and hires a band to back him on tour. So I'm not sure NIN should be included, either.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers definitely qualify as a band to me. Same with Silver Bullet Band. You don't ever hear one without the other. I'm fine with those. E Street Band? Meh we are going to have to talk about that one. Simone and Garfunkle no. Ozzy no. Satriani no. Bowie no. Marley no. Nine Inch Nails no.

I'll have to check the list, but Smashing Pumpkins would fall into this category as well. Billy Corgan records everything in the studio, but uses a band on tour.

EDIT - Yep, they're on the list.
I don't think that's the case with the Pumpkins. Corgan may do that now as a solo artist, but SP was always James Iha, D'arcy Wretzky, Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin. They recorded in studio as a group and toured as a group.
Where NIN differs is that Reznor typically records as a solo artist but forms a band to tour with. The backing band is relatively constant when NIN tours, but Reznor is solely responsible for the music.
