The two adults being investigated by the Collier County Sheriff's Department for attending Immokalee High School were athletes, Collier County School District officials confirmed today.
That confirmation comes as the Florida High School Athletic Association reviews the records of the Immokalee High School soccer team for the last four years and the football team for the last year, said Eric Williams, the district’s assistant superintendent of secondary education.
"The FHSAA knows of the situation and was told by our staff that they were unaware of the two men's ages when they were playing sports," Williams said. "It is under review with the FHSAA and they will determine if the school has to forfeit the games the students played in and whether any honors earned will be taken away."
The men's names have not been released due to the pending investigation. Both were withdrawn from school recently, Williams said.
Williams said the 30-year-old man played soccer in 2003, 2004 and 2005, and also played on the football team in the 2005 season.
The 23-year-old played soccer in 2002, 2003 and 2004, he said.
IHS officials were informed that a man was attending the school on Oct. 4, 2005. Cpl. Josh Pence, the youth relations deputy at the school, approached the man after David Boyer, 19, complained of harassment. Boyer told Pence the man was 24, and when approached, Pence said "(he) was slow to admit his true age," according to the Oct. 6 report.
Pence said he ran the man's name through the state system and found that the man was 23 years old, according to the report.
Only five people got this wrong this time - not too bad. Our resident Floridian keeps voting Germany, but more often than not these are Florida stories, it seems!
