They're on the lower echelon of bands here, but they do deserve to be here.
Not that I think the Twins are nobodies, but what exactly makes them better for this list than say Def Leppard who have sold more than 65 million albums worldwide, two RIAA certified Diamond Records and are considered one of the 50 greatest rock bands ever by VH1 listeners? Why isn't Alice In Chains listed ahead of the Twins? After all, AIC seven records all went platinum and they are considered one of the most influential metal/grunge bands ever? Can the Thompson Twins boast that many consistently top selling albums or that type of influence in current music? No Soundgarden, no Iron Maiden, no Yardbirds, but God forbid we don't include the Thompson Twins, who's most recognizable song wasn't even their own?
That said, I just can't defend their inclusion on this list. They were a fine 80's band with some very nice songs, but they don't belong on a list of the 64 Greatest Bands EVER.
Call it a fluke of the ratings system - I don't know. I don't even remember where I rated them, but I know it wasn't very high.
If I had to guess, I'd say that the bands you mentioned, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden and Soundgarden, were all rated decently by two of the three judges while a third rated them low. All three judges probably rated The Thompsen Twins somewhere near the middle, and the way the numbers worked out the three middle ratings were enough to overcome the one poor rating that the other two got.
Again, this is just a complete guess, since I didn't compile the rankings and I don't even remember where I rated anyone.
As for the Yardbirds, they were not nominated. Don't know what to tell you about that.

No worries. After all, we're just having fun with this thing, so I suppose it really doesn't matter who got nominated. I failed to nominate the Yardbirds, so that's my bad. Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton all made their mark on the world when they were in that band. Hard to believe I forgot to nominate them.
