Just to show you that not every judge in Nebraska is a complete idiot:
YORK — A Benedict man has been given 28 to 32 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl.
Ivan Scheil, 32, was sentenced Monday by Judge Alan Gless. In July Scheil pleaded no contest to first-degree sexual assault of a child. He was arrested in late April for assaults that the victim says took place in March.
York County Attorney Randy Stoll said Scheil told investigators what he had done, “and his account fits with what the victim had told us.”
“My client has virtually no prior criminal record,” said his attorney, Bruce Stephens.
“His ex-wife wrote in her letter that she believes he’s a good man, and they want him to get help. Even if the court doesn’t place him on intensive supervised probation, he will cooperate in getting help,” Stephens said.
“If the court decides on a prison term, we ask that you consider a term of two to four years, for example, so he has a chance to get help and then move on with his life.”
But, said Stoll, “There are such things as mistakes and then there are things such as horrendous acts. These are horrendous acts.”
Said the judge to Scheil: “You are likely to commit again, likely to submit another child to sexual assault. You have a number of things to do before society can feel comfortable with having you on the loose. I’ll make sure little girls are protected from you.”
Great article Knapp. There is justice out there. I have a friend whose dad is a judge here in Omaha. He's a great guy. He tried to get me to become a lawyer. No thanks...
