The Who
The Who are regarded by many as the greatest live act of all time. The Who carried the moniker of the loudest show on earth. Originally marketed as a “Mod” band, The Who eventually broke the mold and became a progressive/hard rock band. In the late 60s and early 70s The Who released a number of concept albums or rock operas, most famously Tommy. Tommy was turned into a movie starring many famous musicians and actors. Keith Moon (drums) was the epitome of rock star. Moon was famous for drinking in excess, destroying hotel rooms, crashing cars and such. Hit songs include "Who Are You", "My Generation", "Pinball Wizard", "Won't Get Fooled Again" and many, many more.
Steppenwolf
Steppenwolf was a 1960s and 1970s rock 'n' roll band, best known for the hits "Born to Be Wild" (which was used in the movie Easy Rider) and "Magic Carpet Ride." The first use of the term "heavy metal" in a song lyric is the words "heavy metal thunder" in the 1968 Steppenwolf song "Born to be Wild." It is this lyric which is sometimes quoted as giving the name to one of music's most popular genres.
