Opening Round Match Up featuring #28 seed Black Sabbath vs. #37 seed The Ramones. Heavy metal vs. Punk rock. Voting ends Wed. at 10am EST.
Black Sabbath is a British heavy metal band, originally comprising Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Terrance "Geezer" Butler (bass), and Bill Ward (drums). One of the definitive heavy metal bands, Black Sabbath remain a dominant influence in the genre they helped originate. VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock ranked them second, behind Led Zeppelin. The group found its signature sound almost by accident. When the group was rehearsing in a studio which was situated opposite a cinema showing a horror movie, Osbourne recalls that Tony Iommi said to the rest of the band, "If people pay to see scary movies, why wouldn't they pay to listen to scary music?" The band began to purposely write dark, ominous songs in an attempt to be music's answer to horror films.
The Ramones were an American rock band and are widely considered to be the first punk rock group. While acknowledged as defining the sound and attitude of 1970s punk, they never achieved the commercial success of their contemporaries the Clash or the notoriety of the Sex Pistols, but still had a lasting impact on the punk, hardcore punk, and alternative music scenes. After forming in Forest Hills, Queens, New York, in 1974, they performed virtually non-stop for 22 years until disbanding in 1996 after a final tour with the Lollapalooza music festival. Three of the original band members, Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee Ramone, died within several years of the break up. It is arguable that the band’s fame now is greater than while they were actively performing and recording. The Ramones' 1980 album "End of the Century" enjoyed the most commercial success, rising to #44 in the US and #14 in the UK. "Blitzkrieg Bop" was arguably their most memorable single, noted for the "Hey-ho, let's go" chant. In 2002, the band was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.
